Weekly Themes & Activities Summer 2015


The weekly themes and activities of the Summer Adventure Club are designed to keep your children learning and reading throughout the summer. 
We will read character-building books about one small person creating a big impact, books that teach the geography and culture of other countries, books about mythical creatures, and more. And, not only will we read, but we will build and create and even bake our learning. Plus, each week features a super fun field trip!*



Week 1: When Life Gives You Lemons
June 30-July 3
Book: Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand
Field Trip: Shaws & Stage Fort Park
ActivitiesWe will go to the grocery store to purchase our ingredients and will learn how to make real lemonade. We will design and build our own lemonade stand and learn a little about marketing a business. We will create attractive signage for the stand, sell our lemonade, and make a group decision about which charity to donate the profits. (This week will focus on math skills and character building)





Week 2: Adventures in Ice Cream 
July 7-10
BookIce Cream: The Full Scoop by Gail Gibbons
Field Trips: Sawyer Free Library & local Ice Cream Shops 
Activities: What could be better than a whole week devoted to ice cream? We will go on a tasting tour of Gloucester ice cream parlors, learn the history of ice cream, make our own ice cream, and read and write ice cream poetry. (This week will focus on science, measurement, and poetry)



Week 3: Lego Minecraft Madness 
July 14-17
Book: BYOMHB (Bring your own Minecraft Handbook) 
Field Trip: Legoland Discovery Center on Wed, July 15th (Cost is $12 per child) 
Activities: We will build with Legos, learn Minecraft tips and secrets, and construct our own Minecraft heads. (This week will focus on design, math, and engineering skills) 




Week 4: Explore South of the Border
July 21-24
BookEsperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Field Trip: Lunch at Jalapenos Restaurant 
Activities: We will explore Mexican culture – art, music, food and language. We will learn a bit of Spanish, examine the plants and animals that are unique to Mexico, and throw a proper fiesta, including our own hand-made pinatas.






Week 5: Under the Sea Adventures
July 28-31
Book: The Secret History of Mermaids by Ari Berk
Field Trip – New England Aquarium 
Activities – We will go to the beach, learn about the myth of the mermaid, examine sea creatures and their habitats, and make art with sand & shells. Rainy day activity - watch "The Little Mermaid"




Week 6: Adventures in Baking
August 4-7
Book: Katie and the Cupcake Cure by Coco Simon
Field Trip: Jenny Cakes
Activities: We will learn about chemistry, measurements, design, and baking by making and decorating sugar cookies and cupcakes.





Week 7: Asian Adventure 
August 11-14
Book: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
Field Trip: – PEM, focusing on Yin Yu Tang - Chinese House
Related Activities: We will paint dragons and create paper lanterns, learn about Asian art and music, and learn about the geography of China. Rainy day activity - watch the movie, “The Amazing Panda Adventure.”




Week 8: Adventures in Art 
August 18-21
Book: Children’s Book of Art
Field Trip: Cape Ann Museum
Activities: What is Art? We will learn about the main artistic movements, local artists, and the language of color. We will learn to draw self-portraits, create color wheels, and paint!






*The cost of field trips is not included in the weekly tuition. Parents and siblings are invited to join the group for all field trips! We will walk or take public transportation to most field trips.
